Traditional stronghold: Donegal, Tyrone

Pronunciation: GORM-lee; Irish Ó Goirmleadhaigh: oh GURM-la-ee

History of the Gormley name

Ó Goirmleadhaigh descends from the personal name Gormghal, combining gorm, 'noble', with gal, 'valour'. The sept belonged to the Cenél Moain of the northern Uí Néill and originally held lands near Raphoe in east Donegal, but mounting pressure from the O'Donnells pushed them across the River Foyle into Tyrone during the Middle Ages, where they settled around Strabane and Omagh. Tyrone and Donegal remain the name's home counties, with Derry close behind. In Connacht the similar name Ó Gormghaile, anglicised Gormally, is a distinct family, while Grimley is a curious Armagh variant of the Ulster name.
