History of the Sweeney name
The Mac Suibhne were a gallowglass family of Scottish origin who settled in Donegal in the 13th century, serving as mercenary warriors to the O'Donnells and eventually becoming lords of three territories: Fanad, Banagh and Doe. Renowned for introducing heavily armoured Scottish mercenary soldiers to Gaelic warfare, they built and held several castles along the Donegal coast. The name remained strongly associated with Donegal into the modern era before spreading through Ulster and beyond with emigration. The medieval Irish tale Buile Shuibhne, of the mad king Sweeney, is unrelated in origin but shares the name's early form. Today Sweeney is common throughout Ireland and among diaspora communities.
