Lyons - Irish Surname Origin & Meaning
Irish form: Ó Laighin
Meaning: “spear”
Traditional stronghold: Cork, Galway
Pronunciation: LY-unz; Irish Ó Laighin: oh LY-in
History of the Lyons name
In Ireland Lyons is chiefly an anglicisation of two Gaelic names: Ó Laighin, a Galway sept seated around Kilconnell whose name is also rendered Lyne and Lynes, and Ó Liatháin of Cork, elsewhere anglicised Lehane. The result is that Lyons is today most numerous in Cork and Galway, with little connection to the English and French surname of the same spelling. The Galway sept produced hereditary ecclesiastics, while the Cork name is remembered in the placename Castlelyons. As with many translated surnames, families shifted between Lyons, Lyne and Lehane even within a single generation, a trap for genealogists.
