Leahy - Irish Surname Origin & Meaning
Irish form: Ó Laochdha
Meaning: “heroic”
Traditional stronghold: Cork, Tipperary
Pronunciation: LAY-hee; Irish Ó Laochdha: oh LAY-khuh
History of the Leahy name
Ó Laochdha comes from laochdha, 'heroic' or 'warrior-like' (laoch, 'hero'). The name is thoroughly Munster in character: it has been common for centuries in Tipperary, Cork and Kerry without ever being attached to a single great lordship, suggesting several distinct families adopted it. The anglicised Leahy settled early and the O was rarely resumed. In County Tipperary the Leahys of Boherlahan became a famous hurling dynasty, supplying captains to early twentieth-century All-Ireland teams. Emigration carried the name strongly to America, where it produced admirals, senators and one of college football's greatest coaches, and to Britain, where a Liverpool-Irish Leahy rose to run the country's biggest retailer.
